You Are Braver than You Think, Stronger than You Seem – Its True.
The second thing that comes into your head when you look at that positive pregnancy test result is “How much will labour hurt? Is there any way out?”
Well, this is an age-old question that too many women who’ve given birth are only too keen to answer. Countless newly-pregnant women are regaled with horror stories by their own mothers, their friends and random women in the street. Quite why this happens is a mystery; it’s possible that many women rarely get such a receptive audience and so they just unload. It’s not done out of malice, but it can really (excuse the pun) rattle any expectant mums. Here’s the actual lowdown on childbirth.
Yes, it hurts, but it’s temporary
You’ll know you’ve got a good midwife is she (or he) tells you that each contraction will end, because it will and when it’s gone, you’re one step closer to meeting your baby. At most, it’s a day out of your life.
Most labours ramp up slowly so your body “keeps up” with the pain
You should take each contraction as it comes. Some will be a bit sharper or more painful than others, it’s not totally linear. Each one may feel different and you’ll simply have to wait for the “crest” and then the relaxation to know that that’s another one in the bag. Done. You’ll never have to do that one again.
Your body will be able to give birth
Of course, sometimes things don’t goes as planned, but that’s what modern medicine is for. It is a special journey – embrace your own story.
You do actually fall asleep between contractions
It’s true! When it comes to labour, let your body take over. It knows that it’s serious business, so you can drop off to sleep between some contractions to save your energy and to reduce any stress you may feel.
Don’t feel you have to be brave and strong…
…because you already are, just by giving birth. Take as much or as little pain relief as you need because despite being as brave and strong as the average soldier, no-one will give you a medal for refusing that help.
Yes 1 day of amazing effort and sacrifice – but once your precious bundle is in your arms – you will really understand that you truly are braver than you think and stronger than you seem.
