It’s a Sling! Keep it Simple. The Result is worth it.
If you’re new to Babywearing then take the time to practice with your lightweight sling, preferably at home by yourself first and then with a well-fed and rested baby! Slings are a very popular choice – particularly in the first 6 months and many families alternate between a wrap, sling and soft structured carrier. Slings can be very quick to put on, convenient to store in a neat pouch in your nappy bag , and breathability can add to the coolness of keeping bub close with some air ventilation for you both. Here’s a walkthrough for you to get you started.
Getting your sling ready
Watch a demonstration video of someone putting on and adjusting their sling. It is always helpful to watch someone else – to give us the view of what each step looks like to achieve the most comfortable end result for both parent and child. Practice yourself first with a toy, or doll with the final adjustments done in front of a mirror – which gives great feedback on how you are progressing. Lay the sling out flat on a flat surface – then read and follow the manufacturer’s booklet and video step by step. This way you can pause each step as you familiarise yourself and check you have achieved the desired result. Always follow the TICKS guidelines for safe carrying of your baby. The TICKS helps us to remember the following
- IN VIEW AT ALL TIMES
- CLOSE ENOUGH TO KISS
- KEEP CHIN OFF THE CHEST
- SUPPORTED BACK
Getting ready to don the sling
Once you have practiced and feel confident about how to adjust the sling for comfort and firmness – you’re now ready to snuggle bubs in the front of the sling. Ensure there is plenty of fabric tucked up beneath your bub to form a pouch like seat.
Practice – it will become so easy and convenient for you.
Remember that this is a task / skill that is learned …most of us can feel muddled initially. It is similar to when we learned to tie our shoelaces as a kid…and now we could do this with our eyes closed. Take your time, practice in front of a mirror, just slow down, and watch a few videos. You will get it, it will become like 2nd nature to you in a short time …and once you find your sweet spot for you and bub ….oh it is a sweet and precious place to be …cuddle close and hands free…now everyone is smiling. Carrying and keeping your baby close is the most natural thing in the world…remember Babywearing is not a new thing, after all…
